A tiny tyrannosaur has just been discovered: it was so light that it only weighed 90 kilos

Although the tyrannosaur is probably one of the most iconic and well-known dinosaurs, a new “variant” has just been discovered. A group of scientists recently published their work in the journal Nature Communications Biology.

It is a new species of tiny tyrannosaur that lived about 95 million years ago in what is now Utah, a state in the western United States.

As explained in a report by Discover Magazine , the fossil record responds to a critical and interesting moment in the history of these dinosaurs. Particularly, from the moment in which they evolved from small hunters and the great predators that were known in the posteriority.

The experts baptized this new variable as “Moros intrepidus” and within its characteristics is a weight of about 90 kilograms, something quite inferior to the tyrannosaurus specimens that were known later. Likewise, given the lightness of his body, he was quite adept at hunting and avoiding other predators.

The history of dinosaurs still fascinates many scientists, and the deserts of Utah contain much of them. In fact, the exploitations were made near a gigantic rock formation of 300 meters high that the team calls “the cliffs of madness”. The name arose precisely because of the amount of fossils that it has and because of the sensation that they would generate.

The finding is important, since the tyrannosaurs roamed the planet for more than 100 million years. For much of that time, two-legged predators were key players in Earth’s ecosystems.

The author prefers to keep secret.
